We are Rainbow Afghanistan — a nonprofit organization founded to defend the rights, dignity, and lives of members of Afghanistan’s LGBTIQ+ community. Our emergence stems from decades of structural discrimination, criminalizing laws, and deeply rooted cultural and traditional norms that have made it extremely difficult for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, non-binary, and queer people to live freely and safely in Afghanistan. In a context where education about gender and sexuality was severely limited and religious and traditional ideologies dominated public discourse—fostering denial and hatred—many members of the LGBTIQ+ community were forced to conceal their identities. Yet concealment did not remove the roots of violence: individuals, particularly those whose gender identity was visible, remained vulnerable to multiple forms of abuse. One of the most tragic manifestations of this violence is the practice known as Bacha Bazi — the sexual exploitation of boys and adolescents — which reflects the deep patriarchy and systemic exploitation entrenched in Afghan society. This practice further increases the vulnerability of the LGBTIQ+ community.
Rainbow Afghanistan was established to promote the rights and raise awareness of Afghanistan’s LGBTIQ+ community and LGBTIQ+ refugees and migrants. The organization strives to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals facing challenges related to sexual orientation and gender identity.
The vision of Rainbow Afghanistan is to build a just and equal society where all individuals — regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity — can live freely, without discrimination, violence, or hatred, and where their human rights are respected. Rainbow Afghanistan also aims to play a vital role in protecting and improving the security, health, and well-being of LGBTIQ+ individuals in Afghanistan and among migrant communities worldwide through awareness-raising, education, legal and humanitarian support, and international advocacy.
We believe every LGBTIQ+ individual deserves equal rights, equal opportunities, and respect, regardless of their identity or background.
We embrace diversity and create spaces where all voices are heard, valued, and represented.
We support LGBTIQ+ individuals to live authentically, build resilience, and lead change within their communities.
We stand against all forms of discrimination, violence, and hate, and work toward equal access to rights and opportunities for everyone.
We believe that awareness and education are the keys to social change and to reducing discrimination against the LGBTIQ+ community.
We are committed to documenting, reporting, and reflecting the realities of the LGBTIQ+ community in Afghanistan and the region to promote accountability and justice.
We uphold the intrinsic value of humanity and work to provide humanitarian, financial, psychological, and legal support for individuals at risk.
We believe in the power of networking and cooperation with like-minded organizations, institutions, and communities to achieve real and lasting change through unity.
We view borders as no barrier to equality and work to ensure international recognition of LGBTIQ+ rights through advocacy, cooperation, and global engagement.
