Second Pride of the Afghan LGBTIQ+ Community
24 August 2024 – Bremen, Germany
On 24 August 2024, in Bremen, Germany, the Afghan LGBTIQ+ community came together once again—not merely to hold an event, but to continue a path that began amidst silence, fear, and erasure. This Pride is the voice of those who were forced to leave Afghanistan, yet carried their identity and truth with them.
This gathering reflects the experience of a generation that has lived between oppression and survival—those who, under the shadow of the Taliban, have been denied not only basic rights but even the right to be seen. In today’s Afghanistan, fear remains an unwritten law, violence is still a tool of control, and silence—continues to be imposed.
But here, that silence did not persist.
The second Pride of the Afghan LGBTIQ+ community was born not out of celebration, but out of necessity—the necessity to be seen, to speak what has remained unspoken for years, and to stand against erasure. Here, memories of pain are transformed into voices; here, attempts at erasure are met with resistance.
We are those who were forced to leave, yet did not disappear.
We are those who were silenced, yet have spoken again.
And we are those who still fight for a life of dignity.
This Pride represents the continuation of a journey—a journey of reclaiming voice, redefining identity, and standing against the structures that rendered us invisible. While the world repeatedly turned a blind eye, we chose to be seen.
On this day, we:
- Asserted the right to live without fear and violence.
- Emphasized the urgent need for accountability for the crimes and oppression in Afghanistan.
- Stood firm in the truth that our identity is neither hidden nor eradicable.
- Reaffirmed the belief that no human being should be punished for simply being who they are.
This Pride is not the end of a story, but its continuation—a story still being written, still being heard, and still fighting for recognition.
We stand—not only for ourselves, but for all those who still cannot stand.
We speak—for all the voices that are still silenced.
And we continue onward.
