Rainbow Afghanistan conducted its first legal awareness workshop, titled “Legal Awareness Workshop for LGBTIQA+ Individuals,” on 13 May 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Afghanistan time, with the participation of 33 participants. The workshop aimed to increase legal awareness, strengthen the capacity of members of the LGBTIQA+ community, and enhance their ability to identify, prevent, and respond to human rights violations.

The educational content of the workshop was presented in six main sections:
1. Basic Concepts and the Importance of Legal Awareness
The first section focused on the importance of legal awareness for LGBTIQA+ individuals. Key concepts, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, sex characteristics, and other terminology related to LGBTIQA+ identities were explained.
2. Human Rights and State Obligations
This section examined fundamental human rights principles and the international human rights framework. Participants were introduced to concepts such as human dignity, equality and justice, personal security, and freedom. The three core obligations of states concerning human rights were also discussed: the obligation to respect, the obligation to protect, and the obligation to fulfil human rights.
3. Violence and Discrimination
This section focused on defining and identifying different forms of violence, including physical, gender-based, psychological, economic, and social violence, as well as deprivation of liberty. The concepts of direct and indirect discrimination and examples of discrimination experienced by LGBTIQA+ individuals were also discussed.
4. Legal Status of LGBTIQA+ Individuals in Afghanistan
The fourth section examined the legal situation of LGBTIQA+ individuals in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. The existing legal framework and restrictions affecting the identities and rights of LGBTIQA+ individuals were discussed.
5. Rights Awareness, Documentation, and Security
This section emphasized the importance of understanding one’s rights, documenting human rights violations, maintaining personal and digital security, and establishing and using safe support networks.
6. Mental Health and Social Support
The final section addressed mental health, self-care, immediate harm reduction, and access to social and psychosocial support. The importance of creating and strengthening safe spaces within families, communities, and support networks was also emphasized.
This awareness workshop is designed to raise legal awareness and strengthen the capacity of LGBTIQ+ members to understand, claim, and defend their fundamental rights.
